They Kept Claiming

“They kept claiming the earth was theirs, until the earth claimed them back.”

They kept claiming the earth was theirs, until the earth claimed them back.

They kept claiming the door was locked, until the door opened from the other side.

They kept claiming the sun rose for them, until it rose without them.

They kept claiming the silence was consent, until the silence refused to be silent.

They kept claiming the rain fell for their crops, until the rain fell for the roots they had poisoned.

They kept claiming the statues would stand forever, until the statues stepped down and walked away.

They kept claiming the earth was theirs, until the earth claimed them back.
